What are Chakras?

Chakra is the Sanskrit word for “wheel.”  Chakras are subtle energy centers in our bodies that correspond to our major organs, functions and endocrine systems.  They allow our life-force energy (“chi”) to flow through our physical bodies, spiritual consciousness and aura.  When chakras are open and energy is flowing freely through them, they move in a clockwise pattern.

Where are chakras located?

There are seven major chakras that are treated during Reiki sessions. Each are associated with a color, which can sometimes be seen (as well as their movement) by some energy healers, myself included.  There are also numerous minor chakras, associated with the joints and minor organs in your body.

  • Crown (Sahasrara): located at the top of the head.  This is your connection to the Divine, the seat of your spiritual intelligence and where energy enters your body and is distributed to the other chakras.  Color: White
  • Third Eye or Brow (Ajna):  located on the forehead around your eyebrows.  Associated with intuition and extra-sensory perception, it represents your Spirit and where motivations are found that direct your actions.  Color: Violet or Indigo
  • Throat (Vishuddha): located at the base of the throat.  Expresses your “true voice” and manifests the ability to be open and honest with yourself and in your interactions with others.  Color: Blue
  • Heart (Anahata): located at the center of the chest. Represents the center of our emotional self, where we manifest unconditional love to our self and others.  A balanced heart chakra is key to spiritual and emotional harmony.  Color: Green
  • Solar Plexus (Manipura): located just above the navel.  Represents the seat of your personal power, empowerment and ego mastery, and where we express our desires and intent.  The solar plexus is also where “chi” is stored.  Color: Yellow
  • Sacral (Swadhisthana): located in the lower abdomen.  Governs sexual function, vitality, reproduction and individual creativity, and is associated with the ability to connect with our emotions.  Color: Orange
  • Root (Muladhara): located at the base of the spine.  Expressing our will to live, this is where our energies become “grounded”, allowing us to be calm, stable and empowered.   Color: Red
